LOOKING AT A REFERENCE

INDIA BEAUTY EDUCATOR RESOURCES / CBBE

A reference is
a beginning.

Read what an image can show. Keep the intention, the creator and the limits of your interpretation beside it.

“What am I looking at?”
is a different question from
“What can I claim?”CBBE / AN ORIGINAL READING PROMPT
01

Describe the visible

Name the colour relationship, composition or detail that matters to your question. Avoid turning appearance into an unsupported account of the working method.

02

Locate the intention

Read the actual brief when it is available. If you do not know the creator’s intention, say so instead of inventing it from a finished image.

03

Keep the creator

Name the original source and contribution. A mood board or reference collection does not transfer the authorship of the images it brings together.

04

Name the limit

A photograph does not establish every stage, permission or approved outcome. Record the point that needs another source or a responsible person’s clarification.

PUT A QUESTION BESIDE THE REFERENCE

Less collecting.
More connecting.

Write why a reference belongs, which question it helps address and what remains outside its frame. A short purposeful note can be more useful than an unexplained folder of images.
